Mental Game Plans

Imagine a player minutes before a game going through his pre-competition routine. The hard work and training has been done, yet a number of unpleasant thoughts appear unexpectedly: "What if I'm not ready? What if I'm not good enough?" Breathing becomes shallow, muscles tighten, heart rate increases and the player's focus is all over the place... mainly directed to irrelevant performance cues. Rather than staying with the process of competing, the player is now trying not to lose and is concentrating on all of the things that could potentially go wrong in the game.
