WHAT IS SPORT AND EXERCISE PSYCHOLOGY?

Sport and exercise psychology employs the rigour of science to investigate how people perceive the world, structure their thinking, solve problems and interact with others, set against the context of sports performance and exercise. One prominent aim is to help performers prepare psychologically for the demands of training and competition, and this is best achieved through working with both the performer themselves and their support team – in most instances, their coach. Sport and exercise psychology can also involve exploring how sport and exercise can be used as a tool to increase overall physical health and psychological well-being.

SERVICES

Individual Sport and Exercise Psychology

1-1 sessions are available with myself for clients looking to receive sport and exercise psychology training and support. Monthly packages are also available. During an initial consultation, a psychological needs analysis and observation (if possible) will take place, followed by the option of receiving ongoing training and support to address the agreed areas identified for improvement. Individualised and periodised mental training programmes specific to you and your needs will be developed. Clients are usually athletes competing across all levels and from a range of sports, coaches looking to develop themselves, parents, and referees.

Psycho-Educational Workshops

Workshops are a great way to introduce psychological concepts (such as emotional control, understanding motivation, developing resilience) to groups, teams and organisations involved in sport. The workshops are designed to be interactive and engaging via discussions, practical exercises and visual aids. The focus, content and length of each workshop will vary depending upon the focus of the workshop and the audience.

Team Sport and Exercise Psychology

Team assessments and ongoing psychological support for sports teams and individual athletes/players is available. This support will involve liaising closely with the team coach, team captains, support staff working with the team, and parents of players. Consultations may combine a mix of group workshops and 1-1 sessions with individual team members.

WHAT DO SPORT AND EXERCISE PSYCHOLOGISTS DO?

A Sport and Exercise Psychologist may be involved in a variety of different tasks, which include:

  • Working with clients to increase their overall psychological performance by using psychological skills training.

  • Working with clients to prepare for the demands of performance and perform under pressure.

  • Working with clients to overcome psychological barriers to performance.

  • Working with clients during their recovery from an injury. Recovering from a sports-related injury can be incredibly painful and lonely for anyone. • Working with clients who are planning their retirement from competitive sport or have recently retired.

  • Working with non-athletes, clinical populations, and organisations who want to increase their enjoyment and participation in sport and exercise to promote their physical and psychological health.
